With the aim of reducing energy consumption and therefore CO2 emissions worldwide, the International Electro technical Commission (IES) has developed a new standard. The IEC 60037-30-2008 rates 50 an 60 Hz asynchronous motors with a power range from 0.75 kW to 375kW in terms of their degree or class of efficiency, thereby taking the place of the earlier regulations which varied between different countries in Europe. It also defines which motors are affected in different parts of the world, and what exceptions apply. In all member countries of the European Union, EU Regulation 640/2009 is definitive for application of the new standard.
